Strength in Strange Times

Filed in: Inspiration

Hey, I know things are weird right now. COVID-19 has put the whole world on lockdown. We’ve been sent to our rooms, and we’re not sure when we’re going to be allowed back out.

We’re working from home… or not working.   The stores are out of everything, and we’re trying to make do with the stuff in the back of the pantry (if anyone has a recipe that calls for hearts of palm, lime Jell-O, and cream of chicken soup, please email me).

It’s enough to make you want to crawl under the covers and hide.

We’ve never dealt with anything quite like this in our lifetime.  But I can tell you this: we’ll be okay.

How do I know?

Because my friend…  we are women.  Women are strong. We are survivors.

We’ve lived through things we thought would never end: hurricanes and earthquakes, heartbreaks, and bad haircuts.

We may not have handled it with perfect grace, but we did it. We lived to tell the tale.

We’ve suffered loss.  We lived through 9/11.  We’ve dealt with fear. Remember when AIDS was first on the scene, and no one was quite sure how it spread?   That was scary.   Remember the gas shortages in the ’70s, and the stock market crash in 2008?  They were odd and frightening times, indeed.

Think about what our grandmothers and great-grandmothers lived through, and the strength they showed during adversity!  They made dandelion soup during the Great Depression.   They grew Victory Gardens and collected scrap during WWII.  They fought and won battles in the courts, on the battlefield, and at the Harper Valley PTA.   Throughout history, women have shown amazing strength, creativity, and fortitude. It’s in our DNA.

We can do this.   We ladies know how to keep it together and get things done.   As the great Beyoncé once said, we run the world, girls.
