My Journey into Midlife Self-Care -

My Journey into Midlife Self-Care

Filed in: Health

When I started talking to my friends about The New Moon Workshop and asking what their challenges are at this awesome stage of life, most of them – well, all but one – said self-care.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot and wondering – why?   Why do we all suck at self-care?   (Well, everyone except that one woman, but her nervous facial tick suggested she might have been in denial.)  Why do we, as women, as nurturers and caregivers, have so much trouble taking care of ourselves?

I get it – when you’re young and juggling babies, you’re lucky to shower once in a while, let alone get a massage or take a candlelit bubble bath.

But my friends and colleagues are past the baby-rearing stage.   They are smart, grown-up women.  They know the whole “put your own oxygen mask on before you help others” spiel.  So why aren’t they doing it?  Why aren’t all of us doing the things that will make us healthier and happier and saner?

If you want to give to others, you have to take care of yourself first.   It’s that simple.  Or it should be.    For whatever reason, we just aren’t doing it.

I include myself in that “we.”  I’m tired.  I’m tired of being tired.  I’m tired of collapsing on the couch at the end of a long day to de-stress with my personal bad habit trifecta:   pizza, wine, and Netflix.   (These are all great things, by the way, but only when they are truly used for relaxation and not as a crutch for pure mental exhaustion.)

I’m going to be digging deeper into self-care over the next few months, with the intention of finding real solutions that I can incorporate into my daily life and sharing them with you.  I hope you’ll join me on this journey – it’ll be more fun with you along! And so it begins – stay tuned!
