Juanita Steedly’s “Chewy Cake Squares”

We are excited to share this recipe for Chewy Cake Squares with you as part of The Longest Day fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association. Please consider making a donation to help support research to find a cure!

Recipe donated by: Allison McGaha

In memory of her MeeMaw, Juanita Steedly

“My grandmother, “MeeMaw”, was famous in our small town for her chewy cakes,” says Allison. “As kids, we would beg for them, and they were better than brownies. She was featured in our local paper in the 1960’s with her chewy cake recipe (see attached photo). I’m including a photo of our MeeMaw with all of her grandchildren at her 80th birthday party. We miss our MeeMaw but know that her recipe, and her love of cooking, lives on through her children and grandchildren!”

Chewy Cake Squares

  • 1.5 sticks of butter
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups flour (self-rising)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt the butter and sugar in a saucepan until smooth. Remove from heat, stir in eggs, and then add the flour. Stir, add the vanilla and chopped nuts. Spread batter into a large sheet pan with low sides (10” x 15” is best). Cook at 350 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes.

Note: In my experience watching MeeMaw make these, if the batter starts rising too much, shake the pan and make sure they fall. You want them flat and chewy, not puffy!

Cut into squares the size of brownies and enjoy.
